International Thalassemia Day

Tawam Hospital in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine and Abu Dhabi Health Services Company-SEHA launched an awareness campaign regarding Thalassemia in commemorating the International Thalassemia Day held at Bawadi Mall.

Photo shown above was taken this morning. Dr. Omar Trad, one of the Hematologists and Oncologists of the Pediatric Oncology Department of Tawam Hospital and his team lead the awareness campaign.

Thalassemia is a group of inherited autosomal recessive diseases of the blood that affects a person's ability to produce hemoglobin, resulting in anemia. Hemoglobin carries oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body. First known in Greece, Thalassa, a Greek word, meaning the sea and was first known as the anemia of the Greek people who lived around the Mediterranean Sea. It affects both males and females and is passed to children by parents who carry the mutated Thalassemia gene. If you'd like to read more about the Thalassemias, click  here and here.

Screening is the key tool in preventing this disorder. If you are living in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, you can seek vital information about the Thalassemias at Tawam Hospital and Al Mafraq Hospital or seek your professional health care provider's advice.
A piece of advice: Prevention is better than cure. Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day!!

I remember reading that Thalassemia is prevalent in this region because of marriages among blood relations?

Salamat sa reminder ng prevention...
